Tax Tip - Master Your Mileage

Know what’s great? Finding an app that turns something that made me feel like a disorganized mess into a neat, tidy, no-brainer that makes me feel like I have my shit together.

In this case, I’m talking about mileage.

I know actors who are great at mileage tracking. They have a system where they have a notebook or a spreadsheet or whatever, and every time they drive somewhere related to their career, they enter it into the notebook or spreadsheet or whatever, and at the end of the year, they press a magic button and it’s all perfect and…

I am not one of those actors. Every January, I SWEAR I’m going to get it together this year… and every December, I end up spending hours stuck in side on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, scrolling through my calendar and email and Googling audition and studio addresses to recreate the miles I drove, knowing I’m missing things, and kicking myself for doing it this way AGAIN.

Well NO MORE! I found an app called MileIQ (they don’t know me, they’re not giving me anything for saying this, maybe I should have asked them to, but I didn’t, I’m just telling you about it because I think it’s fabulous) that has made me one of those actors who is great at mileage.

It keeps track of all of your trips (as long as you bring your phone with you, which you should, because it’s 2016), and all you have to do is go in once every couple of days and swipe one way for personal trips, and the other way for business-related trips. If you want to categorize them more specifically, you can. And when you’re ready, you press a magic button and pull up a report. BOOM. Mileage genius.

The free version gives you 40 trips a month, so you can try it out. The full version costs money, but it’s tax-deductible, and personally, I am positive I’ll save more by finally tracking my mileage properly than I spent on this magical app.

If you decide to try MileIQ, or already have it or something like it, let me know how you like it, and if you have any other tricks or tools to help you feel organized and like you have your shit together, SHARE!
